Ways to Ease Your Partner Into Liking the Outdoors

Posted by Ria, 03 Aug

If you are having a hard time getting your partner outdoors, you may be going about it the wrong way. Instead of enticing them to partake in activities you know they don't like - in hopes they'll learn to like them - try a different approach. You'll be happy to learn there are many ways to appeal to your partner to allow them to share you enjoyment of the natural environment. Try one of the following activities to get them outside to play.

Glamping

For those who are not ready for a full-fledged backpacking trip, try glamping. Glamping, or glamorous camping, can be done in a number of ways, like renting an RV to drive out to a beautiful camping spot in the country, while still having all of the amenities of home. Other popular options include renting tree-houses, tepees and yurts, all of which can provide a comfortable place to sleep under the stars.

Friendly Competition

Everyone loves a little friendly competition, right? Try getting your significant other to join you for an outdoor sport, like a softball, kickball or shooting league. It may lure their competitive side out and they may enjoy testing out their skills after some practice. Too hot? Join a gym together. Racquetball, squash, some basketball or swimming will bring our your sense of competition too. If sports just aren't their thing, even planks and push-ups can stir up that fun rivalry.

Try Something New

Learning a new sport or activity together has the appeal of excitement and education at the same time. If you employ the help of an instructor, it helps relieve some of the strain off of your relationship dynamics. For the partner that is learning something new, it can be stressful and can easily bruise their ego if they do not succeed on the first try. But if you both are learning the activity together from another person, it allows you to help each other and nurture each other along.

Mountain Biking

You may be able to lure your partner out for the views that mountain biking affords. Maybe your partner is willing to try mountain biking but they don't enjoy the idea of having to pedal up a mountain? Try compromising so that the idea is more appealing and more likely to get them to join you. Opting for a lift service will not only get you on the mountain faster, but may keep your partner coming back for more. Starting smaller may also seem more appealing to your partner.

Rock Climbing

Rock climbing is a great way to share your love of the outdoors with your mate. Typically, it involves a hike to the the area that you are going to climb and will allow your partner to see the beauty that wilderness has to offer. If they decide that they do not want to climb after arriving, be prepared by packing a picnic to enjoy instead. You can work on getting them more comfortable with the idea over time. If you were attempting to get them bouldering (climbing without ropes) and had a fast negative reply, try taking them to an indoor climbing gym first to show them the ropes. They will see other people their size and skill level attempting the same problems which may make them more comfortable with taking it to the next level outdoors.

I am a southern, country girl and I have always loved the outdoors. I think one of the main things that attracted me to WM was that most of them love going camping and canoeing and spending time at the lake which is something that I love to do
