How to Avoid Racists Subtly

Posted by Juan, 05 Apr

We live in a very diverse world and as much as we try to get along with everybody, there are always going to be racists out there who try to bring others down because of the color of their skin. It doesn’t matter if you’re white, black, brown, red, or yellow. Chances are you’ve come across somebody in your lifetime who has insulted you or was rude to you just because they didn’t like your skin color.

In the old days, when racism was more publicly open, racists were not afraid to use racially derogatory terms against people of other races with whom they didn’t like. Therefore, it was apparent to the victim that the aggressor was racist. Nowadays, society is more accepting toward people of all races which means that racists must hide their racism or else they will be the ones who suffering the consequences. Sometimes, however, there are racists who just don’t care and will make their voices heard anyway.

Manners of a Racist

What you must understand about racists is that they were likely raised to be racists and so they have no sense of empathy or compassion for anyone outside their own race. That is why most racists that you come across are loud, aggressive, unmannered, undisciplined, and sometimes even violent. If you can try and avoid people like this, then that will help.

There are still going to be situations where you won’t be able to avoid racists. You could be walking on the streets, eating at a restaurant, or going to school and you’ll encounter loud obnoxious racists that you cannot avoid. The best way to deal with this situation is to act calm and never overreact or get angry. Racists want to instill fear into their victims and get them to lash out so they’ll have a reason to attack them.

Rather than give in to their aggression, just politely tell them that they’re bothering you and that you’d like for them to leave you alone. If they don’t listen and continue to harass you, then you can walk away or tell someone of authority about the situation. Since racism is no longer accepted in today’s civilized society, you will have the power of the law, teachers, bosses, business owners and everyone else on your side in any racist situation.

Closeted Racists

Sometimes there are racists who don’t even realize they’re racists. They may make a comment about someone of another race that’s racially offensive without even realizing it. These are the types of racists who will never admit they’re racists because they either don’t know they are racists or they’re intentionally keeping it a secret from everyone in order to conform to society’s standards.

If you come across a person like this and they say something racially offensive, kindly inform them about how their comment is racially offensive and ask them to refrain from making any further comments like that. Most of the time, closeted racists won’t want to start any trouble so they’ll abide by your wishes. If for some reason that they don’t, you can either walk away from them or tell someone of authority about what they said or did.

Live Your Life

In the end, there is no sense in worrying about what racists you may encounter in the world. Just go out and live your life the best way you can. If it bothers you that much then you can always frequent places where you know there are fewer racists. Otherwise, try to go to places with someone else who shares your same views on racial equality.

If you’re with a group of people who are the same race as you, this will also reduce your chances of confrontations considerably because racists don’t like to go after people who are in large groups. On the other hand, if you’re with someone of the opposite race, use each other for moral support against the racist haters that you encounter.

Interracial couples are a good example of this. Let’s say a black woman and a white man are dating in public. This could bring out the racist tendencies of both black and white people around them who don’t agree with their relationship. But the couple will still have each other to lean on for moral support and they can defend each other together against the racist. Often times, the racists are cowards and they’ll back down if they feel like they’re getting ganged up on. Just remember to be kind and polite whenever you defend yourself against the racists. If they know they can’t spark outrage or anger in you, they’ll typically back off and find someone else to offend. This is the nature of a true bully and a true racist.
